A book review previously published in our newsletter:

Emoto, Masaru. The Hidden Messages in Water.
New York: Atria Books, 2001. Translated by David A. Thayne.
In case you missed this book when it was first published, do look it up and be prepared to transform your view of yourself and your world.

Emoto, a Japanese scientist, used high-speed photography to examine crystals formed in frozen water when specific thoughts were directed toward them. Words were written on pieces of paper and wrapped around bottles with the words facing in. Loving and positive words such as "Love & Gratitude, Thank-you" and "Angel" produced brilliant, beautiful, complex snowflake patterns. Negative words such as "You fool" and "Do it" resulted in incomplete, asymmetrical patterns with dull colors.

Emoto also experimented with bottles placed between two speakers and classical music by such composers as Mozart and Beethoven and photographs of natural scenery such as the sun and waterfalls; beautiful patterns were created. When heavy metal music was played, the asymmetrical patterns were created. The book includes many gorgeous color photographs of the crystals.

The power of our words, thoughts and behaviors to affect the physical world is also demonstrated by other experiments. Rice placed in bottles and ignored rotted faster than rice exposed to "Thank you" and "You fool." A Shinto priest at Fujiwara Dam in Central Japan chanted an incantation for about an hour and water became clearer. Similarly, Nobuo Shioya, with 350 people, chanted for a world of peace on the banks of Lake Biwa. One month later, putrid algae, which appeared each year, did not show up that year.

Emoto stresses how words have unique vibrational frequencies and energy to influence our universe. The content of this book reminds me of the beliefs of the Yoga masters with their chants and also the prayers of Judaism and Christianity viewed as tools to inspire and guide us to enlightened living. We are 70% water and our consciousness can send messages of beauty and strength to our bodies and the environment. So, the author concludes that water is a teacher of how we must live - with love and gratitude.

Masaru Emoto, was born in Japan, and is a Doctor of Alternative Medicine from Yokohama Municipal University and the Open International University. The photographs were initially self-published in Messages from Water Volume 1, 2 and 3. Emoto's books have been translated into 45 languages and published in 70 countries. Since May 25, 2005, the author has been involved in a Peace Project that aims to educate the truth of water to children from three to twelve years old by distributing child-friendly versions of his books for free--in many languages to many countries. Emoto conducts seminars throughout the world.

Yes I've read about this article and I'm surprised to see that thoughts could actually change the shape and outlook of crystals in ice when they are formed.

It tells us to always think positively, even in adversity, so that our mind and body will work as one, and we will persevere until we succeed.

I've read about it as well, it's a very interesting piece.
Our body consists of so much water, this has to tell us something about how we want to address one another.
Positive words do have a healing and benefitial effect, opposed to swears and other negative words.
Seems like the "sticks and stones" story doesn't add up after all.

I remember this too. I saw a few of his Youtube videos and it really stuck with me. I tried the experiment myself and it did work. I filled 3 jars with water and rice. The jar that I said hateful things to did get moldy at much fast rate. People always talk about how positivity can change things but when you see it manifest in front your eyes it's unbelieveable. A little sad too, knowing the difference we could make in the world if did something as simple as think positive. Has anybody else tried the experiment for themselves?

Well written review. I had read about this, with the inclusion that an experiment was performed, by speaking into a bowl of water and flash freezing the water. Using positive words and then angry, negative words. The frozen crystals from the positive words were beautifully formed while the others were very ugly. This shows the power of positive words and thoughts, as we all are mostly made up of water. So voicing positiveness and thinking that way, is a much better way to live.

Nice! It could show us the real power of thinking positive and speaking good words.
It was my first time to read something about hidden messages in water although I had red some articles how sound affects water. And it was so interesting topic and research.

I never know what to think about experiments showing heavy metal music to be detrimental, because I find heavy metal to be the perfect work soundtrack for me! Sometimes it even calms me down, probably because it acts as a cathartic, I don't know, extra emotion? Like it leaches the anger away from me.

I've read about an experiment that showed that plants grow better when they are exposed to heavy metal :)
